LABORATORY REPORT Course No: CE 363 Date of Testing: 31.03.2016 Lab. No. And Title of Test: Laboratory Session 3 – Grain Size Distribution by Sieve Analysis Year and Section: 4/1 Laboratory Gro... up: 2 Surname, Other Names of Student: ÇANDIR, Semih Batuhan 1 ………………… 8 2 1. Introduction This test is performed to determine the percentage of different grains sizes contained within a soil. The sieve analysis is performed to determine the distribution of the coarser, larger-sized particles. In other words, it is used in order to classify coarse grained particles like sand and gravel. Therefore, fine grained particles are removed from the soil with No. 200 sieve. Soils having particle larger than No.200 size sieve are termed as coarse grained soils. In these soils more than 50% of the total material by mass is larger than 0.075mm. Coarse grained soil may have sand and gravel. Soils having less than 5% particle size smaller than 0.075mm are designated by following symbols;  GP: Poorly graded gravel  GW: Well graded gravel  SW: Well graded sand  SP: Poorly graded sand Soils having greater than 12% particle size smaller than 0.075mm are designated by following symbols;  GM: Silty gravel  GC: Clayey gravel  SM: Silty sand  SC: Clayey sand 2.
