Consequently, the quality of health services worldwide is also improving, and there is a significant number of methods, systems, and tools that are used by clinicians within the context of medical practice and professional outpatient care. However, despite the medical advances of recent decades, unintentional injuries remain the leading cause of death among children and teenagers between the ages of 1 and 16. In most cases, such deaths can be predicted and prevented. Therefore, it is essential to discuss this problem and collect specific data about different types of childhood traumas and methods that can guarantee the safety and healthy development of individuals in the context of Healthy People 2020 intervention. Overview of Unintentional Childhood Injury and Deaths: MVA, Suffocation or Falls Dellinger and Gilchrist (2017, p. 7) report that “in total, about 1 in 5 child deaths is a result of an unintentional injury”. Although there is a promising decline in the number of such cases, both fatal and nonfatal, nevertheless, the risk is still high, and measures must be taken to control and address the issue effectively and timely. There are many common types of accidents that can lead to severe trauma in children and cause unexpected mental and physical responses such as fear, hopelessness, vomiting, and heart pounding. In addition, many children and teenagers are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, broken bones, internal bleeding, and major brain injuries as a result of vehicle accidents. Various studies suggest that MVA injuries are quite common yet one of the most hazardous for children’s safety. Overview of the Problem in Florida According to the Florida Department of Health (2019), the state leads the country in drowning deaths of children aged 1-4 years. These deaths can be explained by the fact that there is a swim season in Florida, and many families tend to spend their holidays in the This study source was downloaded by 100000849840424 from CourseHero.com on 11-27-2022 22:19:59 GMT -06:00 Tampa Bay region. Sleet (2018) claims that key risk factors in low- and middle-income countries include access to water bodies, such as ponds, ditches, rivers, lakes, and dams, whereas in high-income countries, childhood drownings usually occur in swimming pools, near coastal waters and beaches. In addition, there are many fall-related injuries that significantly endanger the lives of children. Most toddler falls happen from windows and balconies, whereas older children and teenagers can be traumatized by falling from bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and playground equipment. In Florida, there are also frequent cases of unintentional injuries such as poisonings, burns, animal bites, and suffocation. Many accidents and deaths among children are examples of widespread neglect or abuse. Moreover, many states in the U.S experience similar issues. As the dynamics of child abuse and neglect are variable, public organizations, government institutions, and social campaigns are summoned to analyze the issue thoroughly and provide essential improvements. As it has been previously mentioned, many parents and caregivers are not aware of how damaging the experience of such a trauma can be. There is a common tendency to question the immediate impact of both physical and mental traumas and ignore consequences that might occur later in life. According to Dubowitz (2013, p.2), “an alternative to the customary focus on parental omissions is to define neglect as occurring when a child’s basic needs are not adequately met”. Many research papers suggest that it is crucial to develop public awareness and establish a constructive dialogue between the caregivers and social organizations. The Healthy People 2020 Objectives and Intervention Strategies It is very important to educate people about their rights and duties. Moreover, many social organizations focus on the issues of ignorance and carelessness of parents and emphasize that all related occurrences should be treated with the same urgency as other health concerns. For instance, the Healthy People 2020 initiative develops a new set of goals This study source was downloaded by 100000849840424 from CourseHero.com on 11-27-2022 22:19:59 GMT -06:00 every decade in order to raise awareness and encourage people to actively discuss the matter of public safety. In addition, this initiative has been created to gather and provide helpful information by informing local communities on the recent public health concerns. Generally, the Healthy People project is quite successful. According to the organization’s report, current issues in injury and child abuse prevention are not included as goals in Healthy People 2020 but still require to be properly treated by analyzing some of the current trends, ideas, evolution of the social environment, and general attitude. There is also a substantial number of public projects that provide statistical data on the matter and encourage people to take such as National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH). In addition, there is also a need for specific screening tools that might simplify diagnostic and planning processes. For example, it is implied that community-based assessment of unintentional injuries is a popular and valid instrument that can demonstrate level of awareness. In this case, many possible aspects of related interventions are being tracked such as the number of participants, geographical location, cultural features, level of education, and historical context. Also, the community-based assessment practice is cost- effective because no specific tools or preparations are required to perform this test. Population Level Prevention and Health Promotion Review In general, people nowadays are more educated but much work remains to be done. It is a continuous process that requires a great deal of detailed planning, meaningful volunteer initiatives, educational centers, and material resources. Wilkins et al. (2019, p. 2) report that there are many advances in this field and “researchers shifted focus to the elucidation of injury causation”. Accordingly, population health science is actively developing, and local communities contribute to future success in the aspect of injury-prevention field. In this case, environment enhancement in regards to in products is needed. Jullien (2021) states that “a Cochrane systematic review determined the effect of modifications to the home environment on the reduction of injuries due to environmental hazards”. According to the author, there are four key strategies based on the concepts of behavioral change and improvements to the environment. Most of these strategies emphasize that accidents can be prevented and the only possible way to achieve better health outcomes is to manage public issues by combining education and legislation strategies. Primary healthcare focused interventions have proven successful and effective in terms of costs. Primary health care focused interventions refer to a broad range of healthcare services such as health promotion advice, screening programs, vaccination, food and water supplementation, consultations, health education, and policy development. All these public health interventions ensure the wellbeing of a community. Conclusion To sum up, the issue of unintentional childhood injuries and deaths includes many aspects related to public health strategies and recent advances in medicine and healthcare practice. In many cases, the number of accidents is decreasing, and other communities and health organizations must cooperate in order to achieve the common objective and ensure global safety. Nevertheless, the problem of childhood traumatization is still relevant, and there are areas for improvement and fundamental shifts in knowledge, current methods of control, and applied initiatives. In most cases, healthcare intervention and healthcare planning are very effective and evidence-based strategies that can sufficiently decrease the risk of unintentional trauma and death among children and teenagers. Therefore, local communities This study source was downloaded by 100000849840424 from CourseHero.com on 11-27-2022 22:19:59 GMT -06:00 must contribute and support both governmental and other preventative and educational initiatives.
