Chem 225 lab report 6 - CUNY Hunter College CHEM 225

Document Content and Description Below

Lab 6: Unknown Binary Mixture Introduction: The main focus for this experiment is to identify two actual compounds in an unknown binary mixture. This is different as compared to lab 5 in which we o... nly had to identify the functional groups present. Separation and Purification are important steps in this lab because if not carried out properly, possible contamination might affect the data when deducing the unknowns. By using classification tests, solubility tests, IR spectroscopy, and H-NMR spectroscopy we can determine the actual structure of each unknown. In general, to determine an unknown compound, chemists use different tests to characterize the structure and the makeup of a chemical compound such as functional groups. We learned how to carry these classification tests from lab 4 and those results were conclusive. In addition, with previous experience for lab 5 to determine the functional groups, we know the control as well as the positive test appearance to conclude the structure of the compound. However in lab 6, H-NMR spectroscopy will be used to better assist us with figuring out the unknown compound and its structure along with its functional groups with the proton chemical shift. An IR spectroscopy and solubility results were obtained to help narrow down the classification tests we need to perform to identify the unknowns. The results of the classification tests can further explain the IR peaks as well as its own characteristics such as basicity and acidity of the compound. After we correctly identify the two unknowns, we will prepare a derivative for each. A derivative of each unknown will be prepared by refluxing/synthesizing. If the correct derivative is not obtained, then we have deduced the incorrect compound. Results: Solid-Liquid Compound #101 After separation using vacuum filtration, purified the solid using recrystallization using ethanolwater and purified the liquid using simple distillation. Then measured the melting point of the solid. SOLID COMPOUND Physical Properties Property Appearance [Show More]
