NURS 7215: Nursing Practice through Clinical Reasoning II VIRTUAL CLINICAL PRE-CLINICAL MEETING PAPERWORK Student Name: Erin Newberry Clinical Week: Week 2 - Eric Swehla In your own words,... briefly describe the structural and functional part of the body involved in the health problem(s). (This reflects normal anatomy and physiology). Blood is a bodily fluid that is composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Its function is transporting oxygen and nutrients to the lungs and tissues, forming blood clots to prevent blood loss, carry cells and antibodies throughout the body to fight off infection and regulate body temperature. The blood flows through the veins, arteries, and capillaries to all areas of the body. Plasma transports blood, waste products, clotting proteins and hormones. Red blood cells carry hemoglobin that carries oxygen to the lungs and tissues. White blood cells fight off infections in the body. Platelets help clotting and coagulation of blood. When the body becomes infected with an organism, the blood is the first to take action by producing more WBC to fight off the infection. Reference: Grossman, S. C., & Porth, C. M. (2014). Pathophysiology Concepts of Altered Health States. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. In your own words, briefly describe the pathophysiology associated with the health problem(s). (This reflects the abnormal anatomy and physiology process). Sepsis is due to circulatory, cellular and metabolic abnormalities. It is caused when bacteria, parasites or fungi enter the body and cause infection. When the organism enters the body, the inflammatory response is triggered which causes increased coagulation and decreased fibrinolysis. Cytokines are released and platelet activating factors are released as well. This can damage the endothelium and increase capillary permeability which causes vasodilation, poor blood flow and myocardial depression. Clinical signs of shock include respiratory failure, ARDS, altered neurologic status, decreased urine output and GI dysfunction. Reference: Grossman, S. C., & Porth, C. M. (2014).
