Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Methods Studies There is a major difference between a quantitative study and a qualitative study. In a quantitative study, empirical research is conducted on human or social phenomenon testing theories that consist of variables that can be measured numerical data and analyzed with statistical data in order to determine if the theory describes or predicts the phenomenon that is being studied[Yil13]. In contrast, a qualitative study does not contain any statistical or numerical day and focuses more on the perspectives and experiences of its participants [Toe17]. Some people believe that qualitative research is not real science because it doesn’t contain statistical and numerical data. Although both studies are different, they both provide useful information that can explain why things occur in our everyday lives. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of a qualitative and quantitative study will be discussed and a response to the claim that qualitative research is not real science will be given.
