Exp 19 Magnetism Purpose: To understand basic properties of magnetism and learn about the force between a current carrying wire and a magnetic field. Apparatus: Computer, Hall Effect Probe, Current... Balance, Power Supply, Balance, Magnet, Ruler, Coil with many turns Set up: Background: Two magnets exert forces on each other. Permanent magnets are different from electric charges. Electric charges can be divided into either positive or negative charges. We can also determine the electric field pattern produced by one charge and what the pattern is produced by a number of charges. Magnets have north and south poles. When you cut a magnet into two pieces each smaller piece becomes a magnet with a north and south pole. Magnets have fields associated with them. Just like an electric field the magnetic field has a magnitude and direction associated with it. The magnetic field lines run externally from the north pole of the magnet to the south pole, and then continue internally from the south pole to the north pole forming closed loops. The magnitude of the magnetic field is dependent upon the distance from the surface of the magnet. Magnets exert forces on other magnets and on moving charges. The magnitude of the force on a moving charge is proportional to the magnitude of the charge and the velocity of the charge that is perpendicular to the magnetic field. Equations: 1. F = ILB 2. B = μo I / 2πr Procedure [Show More]
