Iowa State University - ME 421Lab3. Debunking the patent

Document Content and Description Below

Debunking the patent 7493601 Abstract Patent 7493601 believes that the three systems, Electrical System, Fluid System and Thermal System are equivalent systems. The laboratory experiments were desi... gned and being carried out to test out whether the claims made were valid. Using the result collected from the experiments, the data were analyzed and the claims would then be determined whether they can be made. The transfer function was derived, and the corresponding time constant was determined for each system so that the claims can be determined whether it is true. The 63.2% method was used to identify the parameters of the system and identify the experimental time constant. The actual time constant was also concluded from the experiment and will be compared to the experimental time constant to make a conclusion. From the experiment, we found that the electrical system has a theoretical time constant of 0.22s, and the time constant found through the 63.2% method was 0.34s which led to an error of 54.55%. On the other hand, the fluid system has a theoretical time constant of 239.86s and the time constant found through the 63.2% method was 185s which led to an error of 22.87%. As for the thermal system, it has a theoretical time constant of 260.64s and the time constant found the 63.2% method was 312s which led to an error of 19.71%. Therefore, the conclusion made from this experiment was that the thermal system and fluid system were equivalent but the electrical system was not equivalent to the thermal and fluid system. Introduction A ME421 student has been awarded the contract to work together with Grunch and Tromby, Attorneys at Law to do a few experiments to test out the claim in Patent 7493601. The Patent 7493601 contains an Electrical System, a Fluid System and a Thermal System, and the Patent claims that all these three systems are equivalent. The Electrical System experiment consists of a series circuit of a 2200 Ω resistor and a 100 μF capacitor and the output voltage is measured across the capacitor. On the other hand, the Fluid System consists of a cylindrical tank with 2.5-inch diameter and 9 inch height and an output valve with the resistance of 43,000 m-1s-1. Furthermore, the Thermal System consists of a 25ml conical flask with 15 grams of water on a [Show More]
