Industry and company overview UMMB operates within the global media industry and specifically within the newspaper subsegment of the media industry. In recent years, the industry has been heavily dis... rupted due to various emerging trends, which have resulted in redundancy of business models within the industry. The industry is examined further below using the PEST and SWOT analysis. 1.1.1. PEST and SWOT analysis The PEST analysis, which examines the external environment from the Political, Economic, Social and Technological factors, is a useful tool for strategic and business planning (Koumparoulis, 2013) and assesses changes to the external environment (Gupta, 2013). Subsequent to the PEST analysis, a SWOT analysis (i.e. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) is typically performed as an extension to the PEST analysis. PEST allows for market assessment whilst the SWOT outlines the business’s strengths and weaknesses within the context of the opportunities and threats identified from the external environment (Abdullah & Shamsher, 2011). 1.1.1.1. Political environment Political factors within the external environment of the newspaper industry are highly relevant. Newspaper companies are often seen as the guardians of information and governments around the world maintain an interest in exerting control towards the press (Gentzkow, et al., 2015). Since the dawn of the internet age, this has become increasingly difficult. The rise of fake news within the media has created doubt about the verifiability of news content. From a political and regulatory perspective, there appears to be general public appetite for intervention by regulators to stem the spread of fake news, notwithstanding the potential effects on press freedom (Newman, et al., 2018). In certain countries, regulators are moving to overhaul the rules governing media, sparking concerns for increased regulatory and political intervention.
