St. Francis College Department of Nursing NUR 4440 Critical Care / Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical Spring 2019 (Subject to Revision) Professor: Anne Bove’, MSN, RN, BC, CCRN, ANP Phone: 718-4... 89-5407 Email Address: [email protected] Office Hours: Mon. 2 pm – 4 pm; Tues. 10 am – 11 am Pre-Requisite: Major status and permission of advisor Co-Requisite: NUR 4440 Credits: 4 credits Course Description This course is given in the final semester of the clinical sequence (graduating seniors) and is a preparatory course for the entry into nursing practice. Students are prepared for state licensure examination. This course, as the final clinical nursing course in the sequence, focuses on the nursing management of medical-surgical patients with complex multisystem health needs in the acute care hospital setting. Students will spend 8 hours per week in an acute care clinical facility caring for patients with complex care needs. Completion of this course satisfies the comprehensive exam or project requirement for graduation. This course focuses on the synthesis and knowledge required to care for clients with complex multisystem health issues. The nursing process is used to integrate the nutritional, sexual, physiological, psychosocial, rehabilitative, and spiritual needs of clients. The course focuses on the most common disorders and technologies encountered by a critical care nurse today, including the pathophysiological basis for illness and the strategies the critical care nurse uses in assessing and managing patients. This course contains information about important psychosocial concepts, legal and ethical issues, history and physical examinations, key laboratory and diagnostic tests, as well as key nursing interventions used in critical care to assist students in providing competent and compassionate care to critically ill patients needing complex medical and surgical interventions. The use of technology in the provision, documentation and evaluation of care will be integrated into the course. Using the nursing process as the framework for the presentation of course content, the student will practice nursing care that is based on the AACN Baccalaureate Essentials (2009) and is within the ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice (2015). Note that courses NUR 4440 and NUR 4449 must be taken concurrently. Each course must be passed with a grade of C or higher in order to graduate. Students need to consult the SFC Department of Nursing Handbook for health insurance; malpractice insurance, medical clearance and background check requirements that must be satisfied in order to meet Department of health and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements for clinical study. Students unable to meet these requirements will not be permitted to register for this course. Method of Instruction Lecture, discussion groups, use of the college course management system, nursing lab, simulation and electronic library resources are used to enhance psychomotor and technical skills needed to develop clinical competence. Course Objectives 1. Refine critical thinking and problem solving skills to effectively make clinical judgments on a caseload of patients with complex multisystem health problems (Essential I, 9). 2. Collaborate with multidisciplinary health team members in planning, implementing, and evaluating health care services to clients with complex medical surgical problems (Essential II, 1). 3. Demonstrate accurate dosage calculation and safe administration of oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medication appropriate for the care of patients with complex diagnosis (Essentials IX, 16). 4. Integrate evidence, clinical judgment, inter-professional perspectives, and patient preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluation outcomes of care for patients with complex medical surgical needs (Essential III, 6). 5. Understand the use of CIS systems to document interventions related to achieving nurse sensitive outcomes (Essential III, 4). 6. Evaluate data from all relevant sources, including technology, to inform the delivery of care to patients in complex care settings (Essential III, 4). 7. Apply safeguards and decision-making support tools embedded in patient care technologies and information systems to support a safe practice environment for both patients and healthcare workers in complex care environments (Essential IV, 3). 8. Compare/contrast the roles and perspectives of the nursing profession with other care professionals on the healthcare team (i.e., scope of discipline, education and licensure requirements) (Essentials VI, 1). 9. Manage care to maximize health, independence, and quality of life for a group of individuals that approximates a beginning practitioner’s workload (essential IX, 15). 10. Demonstrate the application of psychomotor skills for the efficient, safe and compassionate delivery of patient with complex care needs (Essential IX, 16).
