Verification of a Testing Machine Objectives - The student will: 1. Describe the construction and operation of a universal testing machine in the analysis section of the report. 2. Run a verification of the testing machine using a dynamometer (calibration ring) as a standard. Describe in your own words the difference between calibration and verification. 3. Determine the percentage of error between the true load and the indicated load for each deflection reading. 4. Draw graph of errors as ordinates against indicated loads as abscissas, and show on this graph the maximum error permitted by the ASTM. 5. Determine if the testing machine is within calibration limits. 6. Write and submit a technical laboratory report. Provide a table of experimental results in the results section of the summary for your report. Background Information The verification of a testing machine is a procedure to ascertain whether or not the errors between indicated load and true load are within permissible limits. The procedure is covered in ASTM E4. Calibration is distinct from verification in that calibration implies that the tester will be adjusted to within accepted limits. The following should be considered when verifying a testing machine using an elastic calibration device such as a dynamometer. An elastic calibration device for use in verifying the load readings of a testing machine consists of an elastic member or members to which loads may be applied, combined with a mechanism or device for indicating the magnitude of deformation under load. When using an elastic calibration device to verify the readings of a testing machine, place the device near to, or preferably in, the testing machine a sufficient length of time before the test so that the device and the testing machines are at very nearly the same temperature. In general the reading of a ring-type device changes by about 0.015% for each degree Fahrenheit change in temperature from the standard of 68oF. [Show More]
