Counselors are often asked to counsel parents and children affected by divorce. Counselors can provide support for all parties involved with the divorce, build resilience in their clients, address misbehavior and use theoretical approaches to help their clients. Support for Parties Involved According to Kail & Cavanaugh (2016) “Currently, odds are about 50-50 that a new marriage will end in divorce. Conflict styles can predict who divorces. Recovery from divorce is different for men and women†(Kail & Cavanugh, 2016, p 396). When a divorce does occur it affects the adults and children involved. Counselors are often tasked with the responsibility of helping children and teenagers cope with parental separation and divorce. Counselors should provide support for the children, parents, step parents or anyone else who is involved in the situation in order to help their clients (Kail & Cavanugh, 2016). Counselors can do this by encouraging the parent and the child to practice communication skills so that they communicate effectively with each other (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2016).
