Hospice focuses on comfort at the end of a patient™s life when treating the disease process is no longer the goal of care but treating symptoms, comfort, and maximizing the remainder of a patient™s life. Hospice involves not only the patient but also the family. Families are eligible for bereavement services following a patient's death for up to thirteen months. Hospice services are available to all patients whose doctor believes they have six months or less left to live if their disease process takes its usual course (National Institute on Aging, 2017). Hospice care prioritizes allowing the patient to stay in their home environment and minimize or eliminate the need for hospitalization while receiving support from health care professionals. Hospice services include an interdisciplinary treatment team of nursing, physician, spiritual care, social work, and volunteers (Capella University, n.d.). All health care systems strive to give the best possible care for their patients and families. One area of improvement for St. Anthony™s Medical Center is the in-home hospice program.
