I started by explaining the goal of the interview and asked them to provide a current issue in their workplace that involves interdisciplinary practice. I prepared open-ended questions for my interviewee and was able to record their response via computer. I decided to interview a friend that I graduated nursing school with. Sheila is a professional staff nurse for a well-known and well-respected hospital on a med-surg progressive care unit. Sheila sees a variety of patients requiring treatment for problems including neuro, pulmonary, cardiac, endocrine, geriatric, substance abuse, and behavioral health issues. A basic rundown of her roles as a registered nurse are to assess patients, administer medications, carry out physician orders, think critically, and monitor vitals. An issue that was most concerning for Sheila was the increased incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). She mentioned that she typically sees it in the elderly population, as they are more susceptible to bladder issues and incontinence and tend to need catheters for a longer period.
