Festingers Theory of Cognitive Dissonance About 60 years ago, Leon Festinger, an American Psychologist that invented the theory of cognitive dissonance. In social psychology his theory of cognitive dissonance is one of the most influential theories (Jones, 1985). This theory was the main assumption of being psychologically uncomfortable. The discomfort comes from the following situations including conflicting beliefs, attitude, and or behaviors. It is important to use those conflicts for motivation in order to succeed in life. In order to make a change in one's life it is important that they restore balance in their life to make it easier to get rid of the discomfort. The theory of dissonance is considered to be a wide ranged theory and that is a big strength of the theory because there have been hundreds of studies.
