Approaches,” 2013). With this is mind, healthcarequality has changed over the past centurywith advances in technology and the delivery of patient care. The history of healthcare quality began in1846 withDr. Semmelweis emphasis on the importance of handwashing in medical care, Florence Nightingale on identifying the poor living conditions and high death rates among army soldiers in military hospitals, followed byDr. Ernest Codmans creation of hospital quality standards during surgical procedures(Marjoua&Bozic, 2012). But in 1966, Dr. Avis Donabedian MD developed the framework for quality measurement (process-outcome-structure triad) which, noted the then-current focus on evaluating outcomes as the quality indicator to include the structure and process of care used by healthcare systems today (Reinki, 2017). Additionally, healthcare QI programs came to fruition after adapting Dr. Donabedians contribution. It commenced with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which, was established in 1970 by the National Academies of Sciencefocusing on evaluating, informing, and improving the quality of healthcare delivered (Marjoua&Bozic, 2012).
