RUNNINGHEAD: Art Creation & Reflection 1 We all have situations in our life that we battle through some are worse than others. Very easily as an outer lo... oking in we have all these prejudgments as to what we would do if we were in their situation. The painting of the firing squads shooting unarmed people some may say why didn’t they fight back. The sketch of unkind words stated to a girl some may say just don’t listen. Both suggestions seem easy as an outer looking in to do but it’s much more complicated than that. The piece I chose as my inspiration is the oil painting by Franciso Goya called May 3, 1808. Although the scene took place in 1808 Goya didn’t finish with this picture until 1814 Madrid, Spain. This painting is of a very gruesome execution of Spanish guerrillas by Napoleonic soldiers. During this time the Peninsular war was erupting French and Spanish armies invaded Portugal. “Goya shows the tragedy of freedom.” (Jones, 2003, p. 63). In this painting is shows the betrayal of the French to the Spanish the once allies now enemies because of the greed of one man. French just needed something from the Spanish they used them to get what they wanted and stabbed them in the back well in this case firing squad to death. This drawing is called the broken girl drawn on paper dipped in red painted. This is a battle I have fought through my whole life. Always feeling that I wasn’t good enough to accomplishment anything in life. I have two older sister who are very successful me as the youngest I felt as if I could never live up to that. I was shamed by my family at the age of 20 because of becoming pregnant by man who I was not married to and that I had not accomplishment anything. I was told I was young and dumb this should have never happened. Throughout middle and high school I was bullied and told I was ugly and that man would ever be with me. During high school I was molested by a family member I told no one because I thought this is what happens to ugly girls. The feeling of worthlessness definitely burden me for a very long time I felt as if I would never be good enough to do or be anything. The man who got me pregnant his name is Todd Felder he is my husband we have been in a relationship for 10 years he has been my rock. He knows absolutely everything about me and he pulled me out of my darkness and told me I was beautiful and I could be anything and be anything I wanted to be. Here I am a Registered Nurse striving to be something even more. He always gives me that push when he knows I need it. The connection between these two pieces is the battle. The thematic connection in both art pieces the victim seems to have given up and ready for life to be over. They are exhausted from the previous battles fought. The resemblances are that of Goya’s painting it represents a battle between once allies. My drawing is of a girl who had a rough past and was left to be nothing but battled to be something. The variances are that in Goya’s painting it is a physical battle between two countries were death was the result. My artwork is all mental I did not physically die. The mediums in these art works are different. Goya’s used oil paint “oil paint dries slowly and can be put on in thin layers, it offers the artist remarkable control over the final product.” (Martin &Jacobus, 2018, p. 62). The oil paint enhances the viewer's experience showing the layers and layers of color shows the time it took to actually produce this wonderful art piece. The medium used in my artwork was pencil and red paint. This boosts the viewers experience because the pencil is so dull and the red so vibrant it makes the words and girl pop out. The formal elements in Goya’s painting are definitely stronger than in mine but he is also a better artist than me. Goya’s used line, tone, texture and colors very well to show the viewer exactly what need to be depicted I tried doing the same with my elements but just didn’t turn out as nice. I am happy I got to write this and draw this picture made me feel so liberated. References Jones, J. (2003). "Long live death!" the end of revolution in luis bunuel's the phantom of liberty.
