PHY 2048L Experiment #3: Projectile Motion & Independence of X and Y Motions The purpose of the first part of the experiment that dealt with projectile motion was to verify the flight range and fl... ight time of a ball launched at an angle θ. The second part of the experiment dealt with the independence of x and y motions in which the purpose was to also verify the independence of x and y values for a projectile. The purpose of both was to utilize a projectile launcher, timing pad, interface box, a computer, and either one or two balls to launch. The theory behind the 3.1 experiment was to measure the projectile motion using these two equations: y=y0+(v0cosθ) t - 1/2 g *t2 to measure T which is the total flight time of the ball from shot off to hit the timing pad. Where y0, is the initial vertical position of the ball in m; v0, is the initial speed of the ball 9.80m/s2- the acceleration due to gravity; and θ, the angle of initial velocity above the horizontal. The next equation is: R = (v0cosθ) T to measure R which is the flight range, which includes the horizontal distance from the release point to the landing point on the timing pad. Where v0is the initial speed of the ball and θ is the angle of the initial velocity above the horizontal. In experiment 3.2, both balls have the same y-position, y-velocity, and y- acceleration (g= 9.80 m/s2), despite having different x-positions and x-velocities. [Show More]
