Survey_of_United_States_History_Task_1.docx Survey of United States History Task 1 A.Explain the reasons for English colonization Originally, English people did not have intentions om colonizat... ion. They were only interested in benefiting from Americas natural resources, until John Cabot reported the plentiful fish that were present in newfound land. This caused French, Spanish, Basque, and Portuguese people to rush to take advantage of the area. English decided to take part in the fishery and eventually became dominate in the area. Eventually Spanish traders were seeing success from trading with the Indians, the English noticed this and people called “sea-dogs” or also known as John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake raided a Spanish treasure boat that was on its way home from the Caribbean. This action caused a war that lead to the defeat of the Spanish armada. After this defeat is when English leaders started to consider the idea of colonization because they didnt want any of their enemies to be able to dominate the land, and they also wanted better access to trading goods with the natives. (Norton, 2015) Some of the social pressures that contributed to starting the process of colonizing the land were Spain and France mapping areas as “New Spain” and “New France”. Also an English clergyman named Richard Hakluyt published two things stating the benefits of colonizing the Americas.
