*NURSING > ESSAY > (GRADED A) NR 293 Week 3 ATI: Pharmacology Made Easy: ADHD and Amphetamine Aspartate (All)
Week 3 Analysis: ADHD and Amphetamine Aspartate Chamberlain College of Nursing-New Orleans Campus This week we talked about neurological medications and I decided to choose attention deficit- ... hyperactivity disorder or ADHD as my system disorder and amphetamine aspartate or more commonly known as Adderall for my medication this week. Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant drug and works by stimulating the cerebral cortex and thalamus; it is commonly used by college students (Lilley, 2019). This medication is usually taken before projects, study sessions, and exams to help students stay focused. However, when this medication is not prescribed to you and not taken as intended it can be dangerous, but when Adderall is prescribed and taken correctly, the effects can be positive (Healthline, 2019). Adderall is usually prescribed in low doses for children who are experiencing ADHD. ADHD is a mental health or brain disorder that causes people to experience abnormal levels of impulsive behaviors and hyperactivity (Healthline, 2020). Some of the related symptoms of ADHD are trouble focusing, being distracted, constantly interrupting others, being forgetful, difficulty following instructions, acting impulsively, and trouble staying organized. There are 3 different types of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and a combination of both (Healthline, 2020). Adderall can be prescribed to treat all of these types of ADHD. There are a few side effects however when taking Adderall such as nervousness, restlessness, headaches, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, slowed speech, changes in vision, dizziness, and hoarseness. Children are predominantly prescribed Adderall for ADHD, but parents should be informed that Adderall can slow down a child’s growth whereas adults can experience changes in sex drive or performance. This is why Adderall should be taken as prescribed by a doctor for those that have ADHD or symptoms of ADHD, because it can cause dangerous side effects such as seizures, hallucinations, paranoia, and worsening mental health conditions (Healthline, 2019). Adderall should never be taken just for fun or for college assignments. References Pietrangelo, A. (Feb. 19th, 2019). The Effects of Adderall on Your Body. Healthline.
