Defining a personal philosophy of nursing is a vital step in advancing your growth as a nurse because it leads to a better understanding of what you believe to be true about your profession. If you have a defined philosophy, it can help you make decisions and understand the reasoning behind it. A personal philosophy can become a measuring stick or benchmark for the kind of patient care we are practicing. Choice of Nursing In my early college years, I never considered being a nurse. At the age of 18, I did not know what I wanted to be yet. After my marriage, and three children later, I had two major life events that influenced my decision and desire to become a nurse. My daughter developed pneumonia at 18 months old, and the compassionate nursing care she received peeked my interest in the profession. I saw her nurses as confident, caring, and calm in the center of our storm. A year later, my brother was diagnosed with ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, at the age of 27. As I watched him deteriorate with this disease, it was painful and I often felt helpless. It solidified my desire to go back to school to get my nursing license.
