Ms. Scarborough has been employed with AnMed Health, which is a privately owned community-based hospital, for over one year. She began as a nursing assistant, but, most recently, took on the role of a Registered Nurse in July of 2020. Ms. Scarborough works night shifts on a medical-surgical floor, which provides her with a broad range of patient diagnoses, procedures, and various diseases. Her primary duties include patient assessments, developing care plans, patient education, medication administration, wound care, comfort care, and communication between patients, family, and interdisciplinary teams. The strategies used during this interview were a face-to-face casual setting, with pre-determined questions assigned by the interviewer, and allowing sufficient time and follow-up questions for the interviewee. The relevant issues addressed during the interview indicated a significant shortage of staffing, and the “Patient Care Coordinators†(PCCs) wrongly assigning high acuity patients to their medical-surgical unit. Actions taken by leadership include the Nurse Manager working additional shifts when no other nurses were available.
