There are three components of racism: personal prejudice, ideological racism and institutional racism. Personal prejudice involves having a certain view or judgment against an individual or group that belongs to a certain group (Banks 2020). A personal bias or prejudice can influence how people interact with others. Ideological racism involves the usage of culture and biology to rationalize and defend the superior stance of a culture they consider dominant (Banks 2019). Institutional racism is when institutions possess policies and procedures that produce systematic differences between racial groups (Banks 2020: 4). One of the components of racism that I want to focus more on is institutional racism. A part of institutional racism is “petit apartheidâ€. This piece of institutional racism, highlights the daily hidden interactions between law enforcement officers and other minorities which includes the law enforcement practices of “stop and question†and “stop and searchâ€,(Zatts &Mann 1998).
