Most p... eople know in what manner slavery ended but not exactly how slavery originated. Slavery was a cruel concept of individuals owning another person. Indentured servants led the passage to the being of slavery. The southern colonies had the greatest demand for cheap labor due to the vast size of agriculture farming. Whereas the northern colonies utilized the servants for domestic reasons. This article will go further in depth ofwhat matter slavery originated and ended. The concept of slavery came from the use of indentured servants for inexpensive labor. Settlers quickly recognized that there was a considerable amount of land to care for, which originally led to the indentured servants. Indentured servants entered into contracts of their own free will. This contract typically involved being employed for five to seven years in exchange for passage, lodging, and freedom (OpenStax, 2019). Indentured servants were not slaves. While indentured servants would work under a contract, actual slaves did not have that option. Indentured servants similarly led harsh lives in the same way as slaves. Several property-owners began to feel threatened by the newly freed indentured servants because many were given land upon completion of their contract.
