The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all medically stable infants weighing greater than 2,000 grams receive 0.5 ml the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine to prevent spread of Hepatitis B infection. Mother Positive for Hepatitis B If the newborns mother tests positive for hepatitis B then the newborn should be administered 0.5 ml of the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine and 0.06ml/kg/dose of hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) within 12 hours of birth. When the child is age 9 to 12-months-old, they should be tested for hepatitis B antigens. If the hepatitis B series is delayed, then the child should be tested 1 to 2 months after final dose.
