Many cases, however, end up with wrongful convictions because the memory of a witness is cloudy and unreliable. In the research explained, memory can be proven as unreliable from improper memory testing and even as the eyewitness sleeps before giving a testimony. Article One Summary Research made by Wixted and Mickes (2017) in their article Eyewitness Memory Is a Lot More Reliable Than You Think, they argue that memory plays a big part in if a witness identifies a suspect correctly or incorrectly. Memories are often malleable — and at times are dismissed as untrue because of this — but after proper testing of what the witness remembers, there is a chance that what was seen is not contaminated at all. Wixted and Mickes compare memory to a crime scene itself, stating that if unauthorized people began to disrupt a certain area, the DNA would be contaminated and the evidence needing to be collected would not be reliable (2017).
