The number of obese children and adolescents in the United States is increasing every year. Therefore, the number of children that undergo some treatment in order to lose the excess weight is also increasing. The modern healthcare requires that nurses are well trained and assume increasing responsibilities. It is crucial that nurses understand the harmful effects of obesity on the health of patients. That is even more important when patients are obese children. That is why nurses have to be well aware of past results of proposed treatments and evaluate individual needs of each obese pediatric patient in their care. In the United States almost 43% of adults and about 18.5% children are obese (CDC, 2019). The lack of obesity treatment maybe the cause of numerous health problems and may even lead to death. The absence of obesity treatment and obesity reversal is even more important for children. Immediate health consequences of childhood obesity include social discrimination, low self-esteem, lack social functioning, and depression. Long-term risks include adult obesity, hypertension, stroke, cancer, coronary heart disease.
