(B1) Health Inequity/Disparity Mental illness is a health disparity that is linked to the high percentage of Travis County residents with substance abuse problems. It has been estimated that 8.9% of adults in Travis County are drug or alcohol dependent (Woollard Nichols & Associates, 2014). The Austin area is also home to a large homeless population and 18% of chronically homeless individuals in Travis County are reported to have a substance use disorder, more than twice the rate of the general population (Austin Travis County Integral Care, 2015). Substance abuse is the largest cause of homelessness in adults (Smith, 2018) and approximately half of individuals with a mental illness will also experience a substance abuse disorder and vice versa (NIDA, 2018) (B1a) Primary community and Prevention Resources Austin and Travis County residents seeking substance abuse services or information have many resources available.
