(B1) Health Inequity/Disparity Carter County ranks 56 out of 77 counties in Oklahoma for the percentage of children living in poverty (County Health Rankings and Roadmap, 2018). Children living in poverty are at a higher risk for developing mental health issues, whether it be during childhood or at any point across the lifespan (Hodgkinson et al., 2017). Trauma-informed care teaches us that two-thirds of children are exposed to a traumatic event, and their mental health and well-being is shaped from any trauma exposure (Bartlett et al., 2016). Oklahoma children are more likely to be exposed to more trauma than any other state in the nation (Eger, 2018). Trauma can be experienced in many different forms, but Carter County has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the state (County Health Rankings and Roadmap, 2018).
