C229Task1 Community Health and Population-Focused Nursing Field Experience C229Task1 Community Health and Population-Focused Nursing Field Experience Western Governor University Social Media Cam... paign Community Health Nursing Diagnosis Statement Allegany County, Maryland has a widespread substance abuse problem with a significant increase in overdose death rates from 2015 to 2016 of 58.9% (CDC, Drug Overdose Death Rate, 2017). Suggested causes of substance abuse would be depression, anxiety, low income, low self-esteem, low education, and other health problems such as chronic pain, and low access to healthy activities. Health Iniquity or Disparity Due to the health iniquity and disparity of substance abuse, the substance abuse death rate in my county for 2016 was 59, in Maryland 2,089 (Prescribe Change, n.d.) and the United States was over 63,600 (CDC, Drug Overdose Death Rate, 2017). A state of emergency has been declared in my state because of the alarming rise in substance abuse deaths in my county as well as Maryland. Because of the health iniquity and disparity there are many programs and initiatives in place to help prevent substance abuse but people are not aware of them. A major problem is finding out information about these programs and initiatives, it is difficult because people are simply not aware of the programs, have no information on where any would be as well as a problem with transportation to the programs if they do know about them.
