Infants are considered to be zero to twelve months of age. On occasion, we have infants come in for Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID). SUID is defined as the death of an infant less than 12 months of age, with or without an explanation, that is sudden and unexpected (“About SIDS and SUID,” 2018). SUID is an umbrella term for three categories: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed (ASSB) and deaths attributed to some unknown cause (Newberry, 2018). Although SIDS accounts for over 40% of reported SUID cases each year, SUID is the fourth leading cause of death in children less than one year in the United States (Newberry, 2018). To increase awareness and reduce the risks of SUID in our community, the ED staff must first know what is considered safe sleep practice for infants. The current nursing practice in the ED is that nurses and technicians (techs) are creating nests made out of rolled up blankets and are placing them in the infant radiant warmer and/or crib. They then shape the rolled-up blanket in an oval and place the infant in the middle. Staff have also been placing infants on their side and leaving medical equipment in the sleeping environment.
