It aff... ects patients cognitive function and leads to memory loss and disruption of daily activities. It can also cause significant behavioral problems such as agitation, anxiety and aggression. It can cause a significant burden of patients and families (WHO, 2019). There is still a lot unknown about the disease and how to manage its symptoms. A1. Almost 90% of patients living with dementia will develop behavioral symptoms during their disease process. These include disturbed mood, agitation, depression, delusion and anxiety. The current nursing practice for managing anxiety and agitation in the geriatric population is medication administration, usually with benzodiazepines. There are several adverse effects to using medications like benzodiazepines in the geriatric population. There is a proven increased risk of falls and fractures due to the sedative effect of these medications. Stroke and death are also possible adverse effects of medication interventions. There has even been some research that shows that the use of benzodiazepines can make agitation worse and increase cognitive decline in the elderly (Abraha, et al., 2016). A2.
