Throughout the beginning of time, nursing has meant to be “a person who cares for the sick,” but as time passes and the role of a nurse grows, the definition has expanded with both physical and mental implications (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Nurses now days hold various positions, from a staff bedside nurse to leadership roles inside a hospital setting and outside of it. Models of Health and Healing The way we look at healing has evolved. Era I only considered the mechanical or physical body. Era II grew to involve a body and mind connection. The difference between Era I and Era II is that Era II goes beyond the physical body and takes into account what the mind contributes to the healing process. According to Larry Dossey, Era I began in the 1860s with the theory that illness and health only affected the physical body (Koerner, 2011). Era II began in the 1950s with an increase in knowledge of the role the mind plays in the healing process. As Larry Dossey MD states, scientific evidence demonstrated that, for example, psychological stress contributed to illnesses like gastric ulcers, high blood, and possibly heart attacks (Dossey, n.d.). Physicians and nurses began to see the connection between mind and body.
