Healthcare is an ever-changing environment influenced by the past, present, and future world surrounding it. Understanding the influence our professional presence has and how it relates to the human being as a whole in terms of how we treat, care for, and view one another helps us as healthcare professionals gain perspective in how we develop and utilize that presence when creating a healing environment. Developing our professional presence through self-knowledge, self-confidence, and emotional control is one of our most valuable resources in helping us to interact effectively with clients, families, the healthcare team, and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. Models of Health and Healing In the models of health and healing, there are three Eras: Era I (1860s), Era II (1950s), and Era III (1990s). I will discuss core differences between Era I and Era III in relation to healthcare and the role of nursing in those times. Era I began approximately in the 1860s when science was being introduced into the practice of medicine.
