Unfortunately, infuenza can be overlooked as the common cold or stomach bug, it has common symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, chills and fatigue or even vomiting and diarrhea. There is a “flu season” starting in September and extending into March, however you can contract the flu year-round. Diagnosis of the flu usually is done by nasal swab that can be done at walk-in clinics or hospitals. The rapid influenza diagnostic tests (nasal swabs) work by detecting parts of the antigens that stimulate the immune response. There are various strains of the influenza virus that may give a ‘false negative to rapid tests and can go undetectable until symptoms arrive as severe symptoms. The route of transmission is through droplet and contact, a cough or sneeze or in close proximity to those affected can easily be transmitted and infected with the illness. The most recent outbreak of influenza (H1N1) was in Thailand in the Laos Hill Tribe that caused 16 deaths in December 2018 and January 2019 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019).
