HEALTH SCIENCE 11 Theoretical and Ethical Basis of Advanced Nursing Practice

Document Content and Description Below

HEALTH SCIENCE 11 Theoretical and Ethical Basis of Advanced Nursing Practice Theoretical and Ethical Basis of Advanced Nursing Practice Nursing theories and ethical principles form the basis of nurs... ing research, education and practice (Fowler, 2016). This article will discuss the relationship between a phenomenon of interest (POI) and the nursing metaparadigm. The phenomenon of interest describes a scientifically interesting event or fact susceptible to scientific explanation and description. The POI of interest, in this case, is patient education on prevention strategies of preeclampsia. Therefore, this paper will discuss the relationship between the chosen POI and the various nursing theories, including the grand nursing theory, the middle-range theory, and the complexity theory. Understanding the relationship between the nursing metaparadigm and patient education on ways to prevent preeclampsia would help in the development of evidence-based teaching practices. Nursing Metaparadigm Relationship to POI Chosen POI Preeclampsia is a disorder that is superimposed to maternal nephropathy or hypertension and is characterized by proteinuria or hypertension in pregnant women commonly beyond twenty weeks of pregnancy. About two to five per cent of women are affected by preeclampsia, with a prevalence of between ten to eighteen per cent in developing countries (Maia et al. 2012). The condition is a primary cause for prenatal, and maternal morbidity and mortality. It can be categorized as either early or late-onset, which represent different forms of diseases. Early-onset preeclampsia is characterized by severe neonatal and maternal outcomes, fetal growth restriction, and unusual umbilical and uterine artery Doppler waveforms (Maia et al. 2012). Unlike the early-onset preeclampsia, the late-onset is characterized by reduced rates of fetal involvement and milder maternal diseases. Besides, late-onset preeclampsia exhibits favourable prenatal outcomes. References Bender, M. (2018).
