In 2015 North Carolina was ranked 22nd in the United States for the highest obesity rate increasing from just over 12% in 1990 to slightly over 30% in 2015 (œThe state of obesity, 2016). For the first time in two hundred years the life expectancy of children in the United States is lower than their parents (œHealthy North Carolina 2020, 2011). In North Carolina obesity is highest among people in the 45-64 age range and is highest among blacks, while evenly distributed between men and women (œThe state of obesity, 2016). These statistics clearly show the growth of obesity in North Carolina making it one of the most critical health care issues in the state. This report will address the factors that contribute to obesity, the current interventions to address this issue, the role of the public health nurse regarding these interventions and recommended evidence-based practices to reduce the rate of obesity in North Carolina. The Factors that Contribute to Obesity There is not just one factor that contributes to obesity. Factors such as income level, education level, environmental factors, genetics, or family lifestyle can contribute to obesity.
