C456 Western Governors University Nearly every parent has one major worry in life; the wellbeing of their chil... dren.  Despite their best efforts, parents are not always able to be there for their children.  Parents are in most cases required to send their children off for hours a day, away from their ability to watch over and protect them.  States require parents to provide a higher level of care for their children, so schools should also be required to provide that same level of care. There are 8,760 hours in a year, and students will spend on average 1,000 of those hours in school.  This means that there is approximately a one in nine chance that a child will be at school in the event of an emergency or other disaster.  Should an emergency arise, skills taught in United States military Basic Training and most law enforcement training academies become indispensable.  These skills include emergency medicine, self-defense, and the ability to make decisions under pressure.  Therefore, due to the increased likelihood of being present with students during the event of a natural disaster, an act of violence, or other emergencies, all teachers should be required to go through a military style basic training as part of their licensing.   There are many factors and possibilities to be considered that vary place to place. Some states are at risk for certain natural disasters while other states may not be.
