Background or Introduction The authors purpose statement is to determine whether or not levothyroxine treatment improves outcomes among women undergoing IVF, who present with normal thyroid function in combination of thyroid antibodies, which increases the risk of miscarriage. The purpose statement makes sense to me as it prepares the reader for the overall theme of this study. The authors propose just enough information to make the reader wonder if their hypothesis will be correct. Having prior knowledge about IVF, miscarriage rates, and hypothyroidism gives readers a better understanding of a medical journal of this nature. If readers do not have prior knowledge, it would take additional time to review this study. Review of the Literature This study is not visually presented in standard format. After the abstract, the authors start with background information regarding what thyroid hormones are, how autoimmunity is defined, and the statistics of thyroid autoimmunity, all while citing 11 of these sources.
