Is there a correlation with staff safety issues and staff health increasing with night shift versus day shift? Its positively difficult to stay awake certain hours much less have the stamina to continue providing efficient patient care. When youre hungry and tired, nurses often want to reach for something sugary and with pep. I myself feel like its difficult to breathe when I become tired and my body is exhausted. It seems to be improbable to remain fit and healthy when all you want is a soda and to sleep every minute your off work. My goal is to find evidence to show whether or not working long hours during the night impact staff negatively and how to resolve this problem. An intervention I would suggest implementing is to break the 7 pm to 7 am night shift into two shifts starting from 7 pm to 1 am and 1 am to 7 am. Or better yet, have the option for some nurses to work 8 hour shifts in rotation to decrease the long shift and nighttime fatigue. Night shift workers should also receive more sick time leave and flexibility in schedules compared to day shift workers.
