I prepared this proposal for the chief nursing officer and human resources manager in hopes of supporting this new role to justify the return on investment. Within this proposal, I will describe nurses and the interdisciplinary teams role in informatics with a focus on electronic health information and patient care technology to support decision making and implement evidence-based strategies to effectively manage protected health information. Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist To begin, nursing informatics is best defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA) as, “the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice" (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society [HIMSS], 2019). A nurse informaticists role is vital for health systems to maximize data-driven nursing practice in management and the everyday clinical setting.
