I was always under the impression that women should avoid consuming alcohol during their pregnancy because it can lead to adverse effects. However, the article written by Dale et al. (2016) had differing results. One statistic that I found interesting in this study was that œwomen who consumed alcohol 4-5 times per week had a lower risk than women drinking less than once per month (Dale et al., 2016). The risk being referred was the risk of having a preterm baby. As a nurse, I would not use this information to encourage soon to be mothers to drink during their pregnancy. Self-reported studies can be biased and as a nurse, I would not encourage mothers to put their babies at risk for adverse effects based on this self-reported study. In my profession, I can use the information from this study to reassure mothers who may have fears regarding their drinking habits during the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. The study focused on primiparous mothers. First-time mothers may experience anxiety related to their health habits during the first 15 weeks of pregnancy because they may have failed to realize they were pregnant.
