For example, they help in degrading the food that people eat and helping make nutrients available to humans and neutralizing all the possible toxins in the human body. In addition, bacteria help in digesting substances that the body is unable to break down, including most of the carbohydrates and short-chain fatty acids (Mills et al., 2019). For that reason, the body system must ensure the population of bacteria in the body is healthy. This could be ensured by regularly eating probiotics because they help in replenishing good gut bacteria. The removal of some of the microbes can actually lead to disease development. For example, the absence of Bifidobacteria, which helps in digestion, can lead to various health problems (Morrin & Hickey, 2020).
