Items in black blocks are added onto the system for project. Description of Block diagram: As the suns light contacts the solar panels it is converted into DC electricity to charge the batteries. This voltage could range from 17V to 19V depending on the solar panel segments. A normal 12V solar panel has a voltage output of 17V. This voltage is then sent to the regulator which is then reduced to 13V to 15V. A 12V system is reduced to 13V. The regulator then monitors the voltage charge of the battery to ensure no overcharging of the battery has occurred. Most regulators have a built-in voltage cut-off switch built into them to prevent any permanent damage and reduce the life cycle of the battery.
