NR-360 Unit 2 Discussion: Database Search-Chamberlain College Of Nursing( DOWNLOAD TO SCORE AN A)

Unit 2: Database Search Choose a topic related to health that has meaning to your personal health, interests, and wellbeing. This may be a disease, such as diabetes, or a healthy fitness activity. C... onduct a database search comparing one of the following database directories with Google Scholar. CINAHL and Google Scholar PubMed and Google Scholar Explain how you were able to narrow down the number of article hits you had initially, and present within your post a summary of the credible article you chose as your resource. How do you know your article choice is credible? Which database do you prefer and why? How will using a database search facilitate your  scholarly work;  nursing work (evidence-based practice); and  personal self-development? (CO 2,4,5,6,8) The topic I chose to search was hypertension. The two databases I used for comparison was CINAHL, and of course, google scholar. In both databases, I initially started my search by typing in just the word 'hypertension.' In google scholar, that one word yielded over 2 million results! Wow! Using CINAHL, I got back almost 80,000 results. CINHAL returned a significantly smaller amount of results than google scholar did. I believe the reason behind that is CINAHL is what is considered a professional online database, whereas google scholar is referred to as a search engine. The difference between the two is that only those with professional/academic affiliations would be granted access to databases such as CINAHL. Google scholar is a search engine that allows anyone to search for information if there is access to the internet (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2015). Another reason I believe resulted in the smaller number is that articles and information found within professional online databases have been published into journals, making this information viable and considered peer-reviewed material or sources (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2015). Our text explains how search engines can contain a lot of unsubstantiated information that can be passed off as credible. If not careful with our searches, we can receive false and potentially dangerous information (regarding health-related search topics). A good way to help filter out incredible information is to pay attention to the web domain suffixes (.com, .edu, .gov, and .org) .Edu web domains most often only visible to those involved in a higher learning institution This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-24-2022 09:56:27 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/24964101/Unit-2docx/ (professors, students, school administration staff), .Gov websites are maintained by the government, and .org sites are usually affiliated with non-profit organizations. The most common from that list, of which we are all familiar, are the .com websites. In the above list of domains, I believe these websites can prove to be the most incredible. Simply because there is no requirement to post only substantiated, or legitimate information on the world wide web (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2015). To further narrow down my results, I decided to use more than just one word/phrase. When I typed in ‘hypertension’ along with ‘African American,’ google scholar came back with still over 1 million results. CINAHL gave a significantly reduced number of only 1,367 results. When conducting database search, either using a professional or general database, you will receive more focused results when using more than one keyword or phrase. I narrowed my results down even further by adding the word ‘woman’ to my search. Again, google scholar yielded way more results and CINAHL; 103,000 and 430, respectively. The article I chose to provide a summary on is titled “Relationship between obesity, hypertension, and aldosterone production in postmenopausal African-American women.” I found this article on the CINAHL database. If I had to choose a preference, it would be to use the professional online databases versus an online search engine, google scholar database included. I prefer the CINAHL database because I can count on the information provided to be credible, based on factual information, and peer-reviewed. This article talks about the correlation between truncal obesity, high blood pressure, and the production of the hormone aldosterone in black women of menopause age. The authors explain how there is evidence stating how the adipocyte (or fat cell) can produce the aldosterone hormone (Bakris, Laffin, Liao, & Majewski, 2016). A known effect of that hormone is the retention of water. Retaining water increases the blood volume in the body, which in turn, can exacerbate hypertension. The study that was conducted within this article was a double-blind study where one group of women received a placebo and the other group received the angiotensin receptor blocker, Azilsartan. 91% of the women in this study were African-American (Bakris, Laffin, Liao, & Majewski, 2016). A finding of this study showed that azilsartan reduced urine aldosterone by 47.3% versus 5.3% in the women that were given the placebo within 6 months. The authors of this article concluded that production of aldosterone stemmed from subcutaneous adipose tissue cells in women post menopause, and that women that were given the ARB had significantly reduced production of aldosterone both from the endocrine system as well as from the adipocytes (Bakris, Laffin, Liao, & Majewski, 2016). Using a database search will help me to facilitate my scholarly work when I need credible information for assignments such as papers or even to gain more information while in the clinical setting. I could also use a CINAHL database search for information regarding my employment as a phlebotomist. I could search for information that will help me understand what certain lab tests are and what exactly is being tested for. Articles found in that search could help me comprehend lab values and how they relate to a disease or pathology. Finally, using a database search can help with my personal self-development in areas that concern my own health. I have hypertension and although I’m nowhere near menopausal age, I do have a little extra weight in the midsection (my three sons helped with that LOL). I feel that this article I chose, along with dozens of others This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-24-2022 09:56:27 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/24964101/Unit-2docx/ found in the search, can help me in ways that pertain to my life and lifestyle. Another way it can facilitate personal development is to supplement my studies while in school. Instead of just relying on my school textbooks and lessons from the course shell, I can broaden my hori [Show More]
