Smartphone and Social Media use in Healthcare According to PEW research center, a nonpartisan policy institute that studies trends, it found that 95% of Americans own a smartphone, and seven-in-ten Americans use social media . Smartphones are handheld personal mobile-computers that are capable of many computing functions. Social media allows users to share data with their networks and or other websites (Anderson & Caumon, 2014). The combination of mobile smart devices and social media presents many challenges for healthcare professionals in maintaining patient privacy and ensuring that HIPAA is not violated. This paper explores smartphones and social media in healthcare based on the following scenario. Chosen Scenario Conclusion A nurse working in the emergency room received a 28 year old male unconscious client who is the lead singer of her favorite band. The client was involved in a motor vehicle accident in which some passengers died. The nurse was communicating with her friend throughout her shift, who had attended a concert with the same singer shortly before the accident. The nurse texted her friend to tell her that the singer was in the Emergency Room under her care. The friend requested evidence to confirm that he was in fact under her care. In response, the nurse took a picture of the unconscious client with her smartphone and sent it to her friend. The next day, a coworker informed the nurse about an investigation being carried out at their work site related to HIPAA violation connected to an admitted celebrity. The coworker then elaborates to the nurse that the photos of the client appeared to have been sold to a tabloid called Gossip Gazette. The nurse, assumed the photos were secure with her friend. HIPAA requires that identifiable information be protect and sets standards for organizations and healthcare professionals to have procedures in place to secure, handle, and transfer patient data (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015) . Furthermore, HIPAA requires removing identifiers such as full-name, date of birth and patient IDs to protect patient privacy in situations where data may be used, such as in research. The penalties for HIPAA violations depends on the category of penalty, and may be financial penalties ranging from $50,000-$150,000 and/or jail time ranging from one year to ten years of jail time (Blanke & Mcgrady 2016). The advantages of Smartphone and Social Media Use in Healthcare One of the advantages of telemedicine, smartphones and other portable devices is that they can used outside a hospital and or clinical setting to expedite healthcare delivery, enabling immediate response to patient needs (McGonigle. & Mastrian, 2015). For example, Home telemedicine enables providers to deliver clinical care using secured telephone, internet and cloud systems to diagnose and treat patients in areas where there are shortages of healthcare workers. A physician in New York can consult on cases for patients in a Nebraska. In addition, telemedicine interventions allows ongoing monitoring for patients who require monitoring but do not need hospitalization. In one study, patients with chronic heart failure (HF) that had home telemonitoring showed reduced relative risk of mortality (Kitsiou, Paré, & Jaana, 2015). While mobile devices target individual patient care, social media enables communication with larger populations. The advantage of social media is that it is a great tool engaging people and promoting public health. They implemented a twelve month smoking cessation program for two groups; one using facebook, and an offline control group. Overall, abstinence from smoking was the same for the two groups during the twelve months. However, the online group had increased abstinence at the end of the twelve months. More importantly, the facebook group reported that they enjoyed the online network and felt more involved in the program (Ramo et al, 2018). Disadvantages of Smartphone and Social Media Use in Healthcare One of the most important principles in healthcare and medicine is maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. However, the widespread presence of smartphones and social media can seriously jeopardize this principle. Anyone who is carrying a smartphone in the vicinity of a patient can record or photograph a patient without their consent or knowledge. This is not just limited to healthcare workers, but other patients in the hospital can secretly violate the privacy of fellow patients and healthcare workers. Another disadvantage is that social media further exacerbates the issue because it allows the instant and rapid sharing of data with larger groups.
