Data becomes knowledge when it is studied and remembered. It takes time for the data to become knowledge because the individual must not only remember it but understand it as well. To the point of being able to explain it back to others. Knowledge acquisition would be a act of acquiring knowledge. Knowledge dissemination would be distribution and sharing knowledge. Knowledge generation would be creating new knowledge by changing and evolving knowledge based on your experience, education, and input from others. Knowledge processing would be the activity or process of gathering or collecting, perceiving, analyzing, synthesizing, saving or storing, manipulating, conveying, and transmitting knowledge. They all go together like a puzzle, once you have acquired the knowledge, it is best shared which is knowledge dissemination. When knowledge is shared, often new knowledge is created. Kinda of like lab work or research which is passed on to trials, completed and then refined to re-work the process and make a better product or outcome. According to Schairet & Pollock (2010) “Following random assignment, students participated in laboratory-based simulated clinical experiences with high-fidelity human patient simulators and traditional clinical experiences and completed knowledge pretests and posttests” (p.3). So after students acquire knowledge from lab experiences, they can process the knowledge and pass it on, which would be considered dissemination of knowledge. Some examples from my clinical experiences are learning to perform a head to toe assessment. I acquired the knowledge through my instructor, disseminated the information with other students and shared the knowledge. I don’t know enough yet for knowledge generation but the processing of the knowledge and putting it together with other pieces, is what is needed and expected of nurses. Another example would be when I practiced learning strips while at clinical. I had to first study the basic concepts in the book and listen in lab. I then took my knowledge and used it at clinical. The nurse and my instructor both help correlate my knowledge so that it made sense.
