The Roles of Nature and Nurture in Eating Disorders WRITTEN FOR PORTGAGE LEARNING DEVELOPMENTAL (LIFESPAN) PSYCHOLOGY Courtney Rezendes | PSYC 140 | Introduction Eating disorders have the pote... ntial to originate or develop from nature or nurture. Nature versus nurture, can be described as one of the few controversial subjects in the psychology of lifespan development today. However, some may not realize the two aspects, nature and nurture are taken into great consideration within human development (Wilsey). Nature focuses on genetic sources of development while nurture focuses on environmental sources of development. Both are contributing factors as to why humans develop eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. NATURE Research shows many genetic and biological aspects of nature are attributing factors as to why people develop eating disorders. “In other words, eating disorders are often biologically inherited and tend to run in families. Recent research suggests that inherited biological and genetic factors contribute approximately 56% of the risk for developing an eating disorder”. (Engel) In fact, it is shown that a person with an eating disorder may have a mother or a sibling struggling (or has struggled) with the disorder as well. Statistics show: anorexia is twelve times more possible and bulimia is four times more possible to develop if a sister or mother possess either of these disorders. (Engel) Eating disorders between identical twins are common as well.
