Walden University Nurs 6051: Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Technology The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation A system development life cycle (SDLC) is a process that breaks down the stages required to develop and implement a structured information technology system (Ehrler et al., 2019). Since nurses work at the point of care in all phases of introducing new technology, they should involve themselves in transitioning to the latest technology, which will increase the nurses' interest in the SDLC (AlHazme et al., 2015). The SDLC consist of five stages planning, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance (Ehrler et al., 2019). The nurse plays a significant role in developing and implementing the SDLC (AlHazme et al., 2015). One way healthcare organizations can increase nurses' involvement and interest is to encourage them to take on a nurse informaticist role and be part of the implementation team (Furukawa et al., 2020). Healthcare organizations developed the nurse informaticist role to give nurses an opportunity to learn about nursing informatics through training, practical experience, and mentorship by a nurse informaticist (Furukawa et al., 2020).
