Studying Beginnings Studying ancient civilizations includes studying the people, their religions, architecture, art, government & so on for each region. The purpose of studying it in the first place is to be able to trace back to where the common ideas of our civilization started. Where & how did things start? In order to buy goods we go to the malls or markets. When did people start going to places to get goods? An idea was given that it came from the agoras of ancient Greece. Ancient Greece “ Beginnings of marketplaces Drawing: Arquitectura griega (2007) The marketplace was a place to buy & sell food & at the same time used as a place for politicians to meet with the common man. This is like the floor of the Senate or House of Representatives that we have today. This drawing shows the ruins in Athens of what once was a marketplace or agora. The engraving uses sepia tone to show age & shade for depth. As the eye is led to the main entrance of the agora, the buildings are placed in an asymmetrical manner. There is a good blend of geometric shapes & dominant use of parallelism with columns. This drawing is appropriate for the topic discussed since we are trying to find out how things turned to the way they are in modern time as we try to connect them to ancient civilizations.
