(Nightingale, 2009). The role and focus of nursing have grown greatly since Nightingale penned her understanding of nursing. Contemporary nursing involves formal education with complex substantive content reflecting a variety of disciplines that have evolved greatly since Nightingales philosophy. Contemporary nursing marries formal education with the long history and essence of nursing that has been holistic, humanistic, relational, and psychological with concepts of spirituality, dignity and empathy. (Denisco, 2021). In the present WGU philosophy of nursing there are three progressive developmental elements of nursing. There is Knowing, which refers to the collection of information and the acquisition and understanding that the mind, body, environment, community, self, clients, and colleagues all contribute. There is Doing, which are the skills and provision of care that the practice of nursing provides to patients and their families in a community. Then lastly there is Being, which is the ethical model that a nurse incorporates and embodies in ones practice.
